Mountains Meet Sky: Sunset on the Kancamagus
Acrylic and gold leaf on wood panel
“Every September our family attends the New Hampshire Highland Games at Loon Mountain in New Hampshire. Our route takes us on the Kancamagus Highway through the White Mountains, an absolutely spectacular drive at any time. This painting is based on a photograph I took at one of the scenic overlooks where you are surrounded by the mountains. You feel a small part of the dramatic landscape around you. This time the sunset painted the landscape and sky with a broad palette of colors, from the rich blue shadows to the orange and yellow of the disappearing sun. The drama of the sunset was fleeting, and I tried to emulate that feeling with the gilding applied at the tops of the mountains, which changes with ambient lighting and the viewer’s perspective.”
